New York Area Code 838

The State of New York will have a new area code starting next year in September. The new 838 area code will serve the north eastern part of the state currently covered by area code 518. Some towns and cities located here: Albany, Schenectady, Troy, Lake Placid. The two NPAs (Numbering Plan Areas) will overlay and, as a result all calls between telephone numbers using area codes 838 and 518 will be dialed using 10 digits.

Key dates

  • 03/18/2017 - permissive 10 digit dialing begins (calls in the area may be dialed using either 7 or 10 digits, the latter being encouraged)
  • 08/19/2017 - mandatory 10 digit dialing begins (all calls within existing NPA 518 must be dialed using 10 digits)
  • 09/19/2017 - area code 838 enters service
