Area codes 213/323 boundary elimination overlay

California area codes 213 and 323 currently serve the downtown Los Angeles area and a number of surrounding cities (Bell Gardens, Cudahy, Huntington Park, Montebello, South Gate, West Hollywwod and more) respectively. On July 14, 2016 the California Public Utilities Commission approved a boundary elimination overlay as the relief method for NPA 323. This means that, when the new overlay complex enters service both area codes 323 and 213 will basically cover the same area. The bad news is that local calls will be dialed using 1+10 digits.

Key dates

  • January 14, 2017 – start of permissive 1+10 digit dialing (calls may be dialed using either 7 digits or 1+10 digits)
  • July 8, 2017 – end of permissive 1+10 digit dialing (all calls in the area will be dialed using 1+10 digits)
  • August 1, 2017 – new overlay complex 213/323’s activation

  1. Really? More inconvenience……why can’t we have it where we don’t have to dial 1 plus 10 DIGITS!!!! Do you want people NOT to make phone calls!!!
