New Quebec area code 263

Area codes 514 and 438 form an overlay complex serving the city of Montreal with its boroughs and also some smaller municipalities in its immediate vicinity: Anjou, Dorval, Ile Perot, Lachine, Mont Royal etc.

On November 10, 2021 the new area code 263 was announced by the CNA (Canadian Numbering Administrator) and scheduled to enter service on October 22, 2022 as the relief method for the aforementioned overlay Numbering Plan Area.

The way calls are dialed in the area isn’t changing with the activation of the new NPA.

New Ontario area code 753

In a decision dated November 10, 2021 the Canadian Numbering Administrator approved a second overlay Numbering Plan Area Code for the Canadian capital Ottawa and all the geographic area currently using area codes 613 and 343 (Brockville, Cornwall, Kingston..). This highly populated area of eastern Ontario has been using two area codes since 2010 , when area code 343 was overlaid on NPA 613.

The recently annouced 753 area code will be activated on March 26, 2022, forming overlay complex 613/343/753. Residents of this area already dial 10 digits for all local calls, therefore no changes will be introduced next year when the new area code 753 enters service.

See official NANPA planning letter including a map of the geographic area covered by the future overlay complex 613/343/753 (PDF document).

New Ontario area code 683

The central and north eastern portions of Ontario, Canada currently covered by NPAs 249 and 705 will soon get a brand new area code. The new 683 NPA was announced on November 10, 2021 by the Canadian Numbering Administrator as the relief plan for existing overlay complex 249/705, serving cities such as Orillia, Barrie, Peterborough or Sault Sainte Marie.

June 18, 2022 is the date when the new 683 area code is scheduled to enter service. Already served by 2 area codes, 10 digit dialing is currently compulsory for all local calls in this part of Ontario so no change in the way calls are dialed is to be implemented on June 10.

See official planning letter also displaying a detailed map of the area (PDF document).

New Missouri area code 975

Area code 975 was scheduled to enter service in late 2001, but its activation was subsequently postponed indefinitely after the reevaluation of the need for a relief plan for Numbering Plan Area 816, covering the western portion of Missouri, with Kansas City, Independence, Lee’s Summit and Saint Joseph among the main locations served.

This year (2021) in August the Missouri Public Service Commission announced a new effective date for the introduction of the new area code 975, now scheduled to enter service on February 10, 2023, overlaying existing 816 area code and basically covering the exact same geographic area.

The dialing plan for the newly formed overlay complex 816/975 will be: 10 digits for all local calls and 1+10 digits for all toll calls (telephone service providers may also allow 1+10 digit dialing for local calls). This dialing plan is already in place for NPA 816 since October 24, 2021.

New Missouri area code 557

Approved all the way back in the year 2000 by the Missouri Public Service Commission, NPA 557 was initially scheduled to enter service towards the end of 2001, providing relief for NPA 314, serving the city of Saint Louis, Missouri and a number of towns and cities to the west and south west including Florissant, Creve Coeur, Kirkwood, Sappington or Oakville.

The activation of the new area code was later postponed indefinitely, while 10 digit dialing was in the meantime introduced for a number of area codes in October this year.

In August 2021 a new date was agreed upon for the introduction of new area code 557. This new date is August 12, 2022. The dialing plan for the new Numbering Plan Area overlay complex 314/557 will be as follows: 10 digits for local calls and 1+10 digits for toll calls.

New North Carolina area code 472

In June this year the North Carolina Utilities Commission announced the approval of a new overlaying Numbering Plan Area as the relief method for NPA 910 serving southeastern North Carolina with major cities such as Fayetteville, Jacksonville or Wilmington. The new 472 area code will be activated in 2022 and will cover the same geaographic locations currently served by area code 910.

The dialing plan for the newly created overlay NPA 910/472 is going to be 10 digits for all local calls and 1+10 digits for toll calls. The change from 7 to mandatory 10 digit dialing in NPA 910 will be implemented later this month to meet the technical requirements for the introduction of a short code for the Suicide Prevention Hotline.

The new 472 area code is scheduled to enter service on October 7, 2022.

New Colorado area code 983

The more densely populated area of Colorado with the city of Denver and its extensive metropolitan area (Aurora, Bolder, Lakewood, Longmont and so on) is the only area in this state using an overlay complex comprising area codes 303 and its overlay code 720 (activated in 1998).

Once again the Colorado Public Utilities Commission is planning the introduction of a relief area code for this same geographic area: the new area code 983 is to overlay 303 and 720 NPAs starting next year in June. Local calls are already being dialed using 10 digits so there will be no other changes in the way calls will be dialed after the new 983 area code’s activation on June 17, 2022.

These two NPAs cover the city of Atlanta and its surrounding metro area respectively (some example Atlanta metro area cities: Gainesville, Marietta, Sandy Springs).

The new 943 area code will, like the other two overlay codes 678 and 470, cover this entire area. Dialing arrangements will stay the same following the new area code’s activation.

New Ontario area code 742

The densely populated area surrounding the city of Toronto in southern Ontario, Canada will make use of a brand new area code beginning October 16, 2021. Currently, NPA complex 905/289/365 serves this geographic area, with cities such as Brampton, Hamilton, Missisauga or Niagara Falls.

A fourth area code 742 will therefore be added in October this year to cover the same geographic area served by the 3 aforementioned overlay codes. There will be no changes in the existing dialing plan for NPA 905/289/365: all local and toll calls will continue to be dialed using 10 digits.
