New Quebec area code 367

The Eastern part of Quebec, Canada is currently served by area code overlay complex 418/581, including cities and towns such as Alma, Levis, Quebec City, Riviere-du-Loup, St. Georges. A new area code will overlay the two codes beginning November 24, 2018. 10 digit dialing is already used in this area so there will be no need for a transition period from 7 to 10 digit dialing.

New dialing rules

  • 7 digit local dialing from NPA 506 in Campbell, NB to NPA 418/581 will be maintained
  • 7 digit local dialing from NPA 709 in Labrador City – Wabush area to NPA 418/581 will be discontinued from as early as November 10, 2018

New area code 879 to be activated in Newfoundland and Labrador

The Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador, currently using NPA 709 will have a new area code starting in November, 2018. The new area code 879 will overlay the existing NPA 709, covering communities such as Corner Brook, Gander, Grand Falls, Happy Valley – Goose Bay, Labrador City – Wabush, Marystown or St. John’s. All local calls originating within the new overlay will eventually be dialed using 10 digits (area code + local number).

Key dates

  • August 17, 2018 – permissive 7/10 digit dialing begins (some local calls within NPA 709 dialed using 7 digits will first be connected to an announcement notifying callers about the new 10 digit dialing requirement)
  • November 10, 2018 – mandatory 10 digit dialing is introduced (again, depending on each carrier’s decision whether to play an announcement or not, some local calls within the area will be connected to a network announcement notifying callers that their call can not be completed as dialed and that they must hang up and dial the area code followed by the 7 digit local number
  • November 24, 2018 – new area code 879 enters service

New California area code 279

Sacramento, CA and surrounding cities and towns will have a new area code starting March 10, 2018. The new area code 279 was approved by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) on February 9, 2017 as the relief method for the 916 NPA (Numbering Plan Area), covering, among other cities: Sacramento, Citrus Heights, Elk Grove, Rancho Cordova, West Sacramento. The new 916/279 all-services overlay will serve the exact same geographic area currently served by area code 916. 1+10 digit dialing will be implemented as a result and the permissive 7/1+10 digit dialing will last longer than usual in this case.

Key dates

  • August 12, 2017 – permissive 7/1+10 digit dialing begins (calls within NPA 916 may be dialed using either 7 or 1+10 digits, the latter being encouraged)
  • February 10, 2018 – mandatory 1+10 digit dialing begins
  • March 10, 2018 – area code 279 enters service

New Pennsylvania area code 223

Approved by the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission on October 27, 2016 the new area code 223 will serve the south portion of the state currently using area code 717, covering cities such as Lancaster, Gettysburg, Harrisburg. There will be a permissive 7/10 digit dialing period and then all calls in the area will be dialed using 10 digits.

Key dates

  • March 4, 2017 – permissive 7/10 digit dialing period begins (local calls within area code 717 may be dialed using both 7 or 10 digits, with the latter being encouraged)
  • August 26, 2017 – mandatory 10 digit dialing begins
  • September 26, 2017 – area code 223 enters service

New Pennsylvania area code 445

Philadelphia will have a new area code starting March 3rd, 2018. The new 445 area code was approved on November 9, 2016 by the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission and will serve the same geographic area currently served by overlay complex 215/267 – the city of Philadelphia, PA. 10 digit dialing is already used to dial local calls within the overlay complex’ current boundaries.

New State of New York Area Code 838

The State of New York will have a new area code starting next year in September. The new 838 area code will serve the north eastern part of the state currently covered by area code 518. Some towns and cities located here: Albany, Schenectady, Troy, Lake Placid. The two NPAs (Numbering Plan Areas) will overlay and, as a result all calls between telephone numbers using area codes 838 and 518 will be dialed using 10 digits.

Key dates

  • 03/18/2017 – permissive 10 digit dialing begins (calls in the area may be dialed using either 7 or 10 digits, the latter being encouraged)
  • 08/19/2017 – mandatory 10 digit dialing begins (all calls within existing NPA 518 must be dialed using 10 digits)
  • 09/19/2017 – area code 838 enters service

New Texas area code 726

The Greater San Antonio area in Texas, currently served by NPA 210 will have a new area code overlaying the aforementioned NPA beginning October 23, 2017. The new overlay area code is 726, approved on July 20, 2016 by the Public Utilities Commission of Texas.

Key dates

  • March 25, 2017 – start of permissive 7/10 digit dialing for all calls in the area, local calls included (during the permissive dialing period calls may be dialed using both 7 and 10 digits although 10 digit dialing is encouraged)
  • September 23, 2017 – mandatory 10 digit dialing begins
  • October 23, 2017 – new area code 726 enters service

Area codes 213/323 boundary elimination overlay

California area codes 213 and 323 currently serve the downtown Los Angeles area and a number of surrounding cities (Bell Gardens, Cudahy, Huntington Park, Montebello, South Gate, West Hollywwod and more) respectively. On July 14, 2016 the California Public Utilities Commission approved a boundary elimination overlay as the relief method for NPA 323. This means that, when the new overlay complex enters service both area codes 323 and 213 will basically cover the same area. The bad news is that local calls will be dialed using 1+10 digits.

Key dates

  • January 14, 2017 – start of permissive 1+10 digit dialing (calls may be dialed using either 7 digits or 1+10 digits)
  • July 8, 2017 – end of permissive 1+10 digit dialing (all calls in the area will be dialed using 1+10 digits)
  • August 1, 2017 – new overlay complex 213/323’s activation

New Washington area code 564

The more populous, western part of Washington State is currently served by 4 area codes: 206, 253, 360 and 425. The Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission approved on May 19, 2016 the introduction of the new area code 564 which will initially overlay area code 360 and eventually the entire area currently served by the 4 aforementioned NPAs.

Key dates

  • January 17, 2017 – start of permissive 7/10 digit dialing period for all 4 NPAs (206, 253, 360 and 425); during the permissive period local calls may be dialed using either 7 or 10 digits
  • July 29, 2017 – start of mandatory 10 digit dialing (it is not clear whether the mandatory 10 digit dialing applies to all 4 NPA or just NPA 360 – the official planning letter below also suggests that mandatory 10 digit dialing will be implemented for all 4 NPAs by September 30, 2017)
  • August 28, 2017 – new area code 564 enters service, overlaying area code 360

Plans for NPAs’ 206, 253 and 425 relief will be announced at a later time.

New State of New York area code 680

On July 17, 2015 a new area code was approved for the North Western portion of the New York State including towns such as Syracuse and Utica. The new 680 area code will overlay existing NPA 315, therefore serving the exact same area. 10 digit dialing will become mandatory as a result.

Key dates

  • March 12, 2015 – start of permissive 10 digit dialing period (during this time callers are encouraged to dial all local calls using 10 digits, but may also continue using just 7 digits)
  • February 11, 2017 – end of permissive 10 digit dialing (10 digit dialing becomes mandatory for all calls within NPA 315)
  • March 11, 2017 – new area code 680 enters service
