Ohio Area Code 220

Published: January 14, 2015

In December, 2013 the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio approved a new area code (220) as the relief method for the existing 740 area code, serving the southeastern part of Ohio with towns such as Cambridge, Jackson, Lancaster, Portsmouth and so on. The new NPA will cover the exact same area and will become active on April 22, 2015.

The introduction of the new area code will trigger a new requirement for calls within this area: 10 digit dialing for all local calls. A permissive dialing period, during which both 7 and 10 digits may be used, started on September 20, 2014 and will end on March 21, 2015 when 10 digit dialing becomes mandatory.

Key dates

  • September 20, 2014 - start of permissive dialing (7/10 digits)
  • March 21, 2015 - end of permissive dialing, 10 digits must be used to place local calls
  • April 22, 2015 - area code 220 enters service
