A relief plan was approved back in 2008 for area code 920 of Wisconsin, USA. This area code covers the Eastern part of the state with larger cities such as Green Bay, Oshkosh or Sheboygan. The same geographic area will also be served by the new NPA 274 which will overlay NPA 920 starting March 10, 2012. A longer than usual permissive 10 digit dialing period will start on May 14, 2011 and end on February 11, 2012 when the 10 digit dialing will become mandatory.

Area code 274's activation has been postponed until February 22, 2014.
As of March 21, 2022 the newly announced Wisconsin area code 274 is yet to enter service. A few days ago a new planning letter was published by NANPA announcing a new date for this NPA's introduction: March 22, 2024. In addition, no central office codes are to be assigned before all NPA 920's central office codes have been exhausted.
Once again, the Wisconsin Public Service Commission is announcing a change in NPA's 274 implementation plan via planning letter 593 (PDF document). The new in service date for area code 274 is May 5, 2023.
