Currently, the Canadian province of British Columbia uses 3 area codes: 604, 250 and 778. Area codes 604 and 250 serve the Vancouver area (including cities such as Burnaby, Coquitlam, Surrey, etc) and the rest of the province respectively, while 778 overlays both area codes, therefore serving the whole province.
A new area code 236 is scheduled to become active on June 1, 2013. The new area code will also cover the whole BC territory, overlaying all 3 existing area codes (604, 250 and 778). Since 10 digit dialing is already mandatory in this area, no changes will take place in how people dial phone calls.
