South Carolina Area Code 839

Area code 803 in central South Carolina, serving cities such as Camden, Columbia, Orangeburg, will be overlaid by the new area code 839 from May 2020. The new code was approved on July 26, 2018 as the relief method for NPA 803 and will cover the same geographic area. All local calls will be dialed using 10 digits.

Key dates

• October 26, 2019 - permissive 10 digit dialing begins (local calls between phone numbers in NPA 803 may be dialed using both 7 and 10 digits)
• April 25, 2020 - mandatory 10 digit dialing begins for local calls between area code 803 telephone numbers
• May 26, 2020 - new area code 839 enters service
