Los Angeles, California will apparently be the first city in this state to use 3 area codes: on May 16 the California Public Utilities Commission announced a relief plan for Numbering Plan Area overlay complex 213/323, serving the city of Los Angeles. The newly announced 738 area code will be added to the aforementioned overlay complex and will therefore serve the same area starting November 1, 2024. Since 1+10 digit dialing is already used for calls originating within NPAs 213 and 323, no change in the dialing plan used by L.A. residents will be required.
