New Nova Scotia/PEI area code 782

Canadian provinces Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island are currently served by area code 902. As a relief method for this NPA the new area code 782 will be introduced on November 30, 2014 to cover the exact same region. As a result 10 digit dialing will become mandatory for all national calls originating within any of the two provinces (local calls included) starting November 30, 2014. There will also be a permissive 10 digit dialing period starting August 23, 2014. During the permissive period local calls will work either by dialing 7 or 10 digits.

New Indiana area code 930

A new area code will be activated in 2014 as a relief plan for NPA 812 serving the southern part of Indiana (Bloomington, Evansville, Terre Haute..). The new area code 930 will be activated on October 6, 2014. A permissive 10 digit dialing period will be introduced on March 1, 2014. During this permissive period local calls in the area covered by existing area code 812 will be dialed by using either 7 or 10 digit dialing (the latter is encouraged). The end of the permissive period is September 6 – this is the date when 10 digit dialing becomes mandatory for all local calls in this area.

New Pennsylvania area code 272

Pennsylvania area code 570, covering towns and cities such as Carbondale, Mountain Top, Plymouth, Scranton or Wilkes-Barre will be overlaid by the new area code 272 starting October 21, 2013. The new area code will cover the same area currently served by area code 570.

The use of two area codes in this northern part of Pennsylvania will result in mandatory 10 digit dialing for all instate, including local calls. There is a permissive 10 digit dialing period currently in place for 570 local calls (March 21 to September 21), during which both 7 and 10 digit dialing are permitted. From September 21 to October 21, 10 digit dialing for all calls within the 570 area code becomes mandatory. Starting October 21, the new 272 NPA becomes active.

New British Columbia area code 236

Currently, the Canadian province of British Columbia uses 3 area codes: 604, 250 and 778. Area codes 604 and 250 serve the Vancouver area (including cities such as Burnaby, Coquitlam, Surrey, etc) and the rest of the province respectively, while 778 overlays both area codes, therefore serving the whole province.

A new area code 236 is scheduled to become active on June 1, 2013. The new area code will also cover the whole BC territory, overlaying all 3 existing area codes (604, 250 and 778). Since 10 digit dialing is already mandatory in this area, no changes will take place in how people dial phone calls.

New Kentucky area code 364

A new area code was announced for the state of Kentucky in December 2012. The new 364 NPA will be introduced on March 3, 2014 and will overlay area code 270 covering KY cities such as Bowling Green, Elizabethtown, Owensboro, Paducah. 10 digit dialing will be mandatory starting February 1, 2014 for calls within the newly created overlay area 270/364. A permissive 10 digit dialing period is scheduled to begin on August 3, 2013. During the permissive dialing period local calls within area code 270 may be dialed using both 7 and 10 digit dialing.

New Ontario area code 437

Area code 437 will be introduced on March 25, 2013 as relief for overlay complex 416/647 covering the city of Toronto, Ontario. The new area code will cover the same geographical area. Since 10 digit dialing is already mandatoty in existing overlay complex 416/647, no permissive period is required and no changes wil be made in the way residents of the city of Toronto dial telephone calls.
