Area code 786 to serve Florida Keys area

Miami-Dade County and the Florida Keys area in Monroe County, Florida have been using area code 305 for many years. Back in 1998, NANPA added NPA 786 as the relief method for NPA 305, but only for Miami-Dade County. The method is called “concentrated overlay”. The Florida Keys area (Key Largo, Marathon, Islamorada, Key West, etc) have continued using area code 305 only. However, in August 2001 NANPA introduced a permissive dialing period in the area in preparation for a future expansion of overlay complex 305/786 for Monroe County’s Florida Keys. During the permissive dialing period people can dial local calls using both 7 and 10 digit dialing, but are encouraged to use the latter.

On July 18, 2014 NANPA finally approved the expansion. Area code 786 will serve the aforementioned Florida communities starting June 1, 2015. 10 digit dialing for local calls becomes mandatory on April 18, 2015.

Key dates

  • August 1, 2001 – start of 7/10 digit permissive dialing period
  • April 18, 2015 – end of permissive dialing
  • June 1, 2015 – area code 786 activated for the portion of Monroe County served by area code 305

New Alberta area code 825

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) approved a new area code for the province of Alberta on October 30, 2013. The new 825 area code is the second NPA to be introduced as an overlay code for the entire province.

Alberta is currently served by 3 area codes: 403 covering the southern third of the province, including Calgary, 780 covering the remainder northern portion, including Edmonton, and 587 overlaying both 403 and 780 and serving the entire province. The new area code 825, scheduled to enter service on April 9, 2016, will also cover the entire province, overlaying all 3 existing area codes.

Local calls in the area are already dialed using 10 digits so this new area code relief will bring no changes to the way Alberta’s residents dial telephone calls.

The newly approved NPA will overlay 336 (will serve the exact same area).

After a 6 month permissive dialing period, when local calls within area code 336 may be dialed using both 7 and 10 digits, 10 digit dialing becomes mandatory in April, 2016..

New Ontario area code 548

The Canadian Radio Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) approved a new area code in June, 2014 as the relief method for overlay complex 519/226 – the two area codes which currently serve the southwestern part of Ontario, Canada. Some example cities using these codes: Kitchener/Cambridge/Waterloo region, Guelph, London, Windsor, etc. The new area code 548 will also cover this same area starting June 4, 2016.

Communities in this part of Ontario have been using 2 area codes since 2006, when area code 226 was overlaid on 519, which means that 10 digit dialing is already required when calling locally. The addition of a third area code will therefore have no effect on how calls should be dialed when NPA 548 enters service next year.
